Hinxton is one of a clump of villages (including Ickleton and Chesterford) that mark a quite distinct change in character from Duxford, Whittlesford and the other villages back towards Cambridge. It has a much more rural vibe with flinty facades, wooden barns and smart pargetting giving its architecture more in common with its north-Essex neighbours. If you’re moving to Cambridge from the proper countryside and want to feel more at home then it’s well worth a trip to understand this. It's only about 7 miles south of the city boundary and about 5 miles north of Saffron Walden. Hinxton is famous amongst science types the world over as it’s home to the Wellcome Genome Campus a science park that stands in the grounds of Hinxton Hall. If I ever made a horror film I’d call it the Human Gnome Project. It would be about a 13-year-long Frankenstein style quest to build the ultimate man/gnome hybrid killing machine. Five stars, The Guardian.

The village has a popular inn, village hall and Church and is surrounded by attractive, leafy countryside. There are primary schools at neighbouring Duxford or Great Chesterford and secondary schooling at Sawston and in Saffron Walden. There is a mainline railway station at next door Great Chesterford (2 miles), or at Whittlesford Parkway. If you’re the type that gets peckish in the middle of the night you can pick up Percy Pigs 24 hours a day or a McDonalds at the service station a couple of miles outside the village. You could probably just about walk that if you’re too ‘tired’ to drive.
