Listen to your own advice

I am not sure how often one does this but I guess there’s a time and a place for it.  And clearly it will depend on whether you consider you give, er, good advice:
As agents we share our thoughts and give advice daily to clients looking to sell or let their property, on how to prepare it and create the greatest impact. Typically I share my three easy fixes which collectively have a huge impact on how a room or property looks. I am afraid it's not a huge revelation, in fact it's really very simple, but often something that people forget when they are, quite understandably, caught up in everything associated with moving.

  1. De-clutter
  2. Decorate
  3. Clean

Very few people live in show homes, some do and it never ceases to amaze me how they keep their home so tidy, but most don’t. I would walk through each room, stand in a corner and mentally remove things that do no need to be there. Later, box it up, put it under the bed or in the loft or in a cupboard.  Essentially get it out of view.
When the decluttering is done occasionally the need for redecoration is highlighted. Keep colours neutral and fresh - remember this isn't for you but for the buyer. Lighter colours make spaces feel larger, however much you love Farrow and Ball Stiffkey Blue. Once this is done a thorough clean to finish things off goes a long way.

It's all very simple. So where am I going with “listen to your own advice”?
When we moved into 40 High St there were just three of us working here, it was minimal and looked beautiful. Kind of like when you move into your new home. Maybe it's just you, then your partner moves in, and then you start a family.  Things get a little cramped and stuff gathers but you are oblivious to it, as you are too busy with life. This is where we are at the moment (minus the toddlers - just) .There are 8 of us downstairs where there were originally 3 and in every corner things have gathered and drawers are full of unnecessary things that we do not need to keep. Everything is just a little untidy.
Today we are having a declutter and clean afternoon. We are skipping the decorating as this is all okay. We hope to create as near as possible to how the office looked all those years ago. Fingers crossed it will create an even better environment for us all to work in. We strongly believe in the adage, tidy desk tidy mind!
